Chief of Police Jim McDonnell brings over 40 years of dedicated service to law enforcement. He began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1981, steadily rising through the ranks to become First Assistant Chief. A nationally recognized leader in community policing, Chief McDonnell was instrumental in transforming the LAPD by prioritizing de-escalation techniques and strengthening community relationships, helping to position the department as a model for modern policing nationwide.

In 2010, Chief McDonnell was appointed Chief of the Long Beach Police Department, where his leadership led to significant reductions in crime. His efforts earned Long Beach national recognition for its work in community engagement, counterterrorism, gang enforcement, and human trafficking investigations. In 2014, he was elected Sheriff of Los Angeles County, where he focused on accountability by establishing key oversight mechanisms, increasing transparency, and launching initiatives to build community trust.

Chief McDonnell holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and has completed executive education programs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and the FBI National Executive Institute. A devoted family man, married with two children, Chief McDonnell’s commitment to public safety is deeply informed by his belief that strong communities are built on the well-being and security of families. His vision for the Los Angeles Police Department emphasizes strengthening community ties, enhancing officer wellness, and ensuring a safer, more resilient Los Angeles for all.
