  • Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the shipping industry, affecting every aspect of operations, from port logistics to shipping routes and workforce management.

  • While AI promises efficiency gains, cost reductions, and enhanced security, it also brings uncertainty—especially for workers who fear job displacement.

  • For business leaders, the challenge is twofold: adopting AI strategically while ensuring their workforce remains engaged, productive, and prepared for the future.

Captain Jon Kurtz grew up mostly in Wilmington, DE. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1982 and ultimately served almost 28 years, retiring in January 2010.

During his career, Captain Kurtz had the privilege of serving four tours as a commanding officer including USS Patriot (MCM-7), a mine countermeasures ship homeported in Sasebo, Japan; the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City Beach, FL; Naval Magazine Indian Island, Washington (the weapons station servicing ships of the pacific northwest): and Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, CA.

Captain Kurtz is a qualified Surface Warfare Officer and Deep Sea Diving Officer. He has master's degrees from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA.

At the urging of many colleagues over the years, Jon finally started to get in front of people and share his leadership experiences - the good and the bad. Note: None of his bad decisions ended up serving as aids or hazards to navigation. Somewhat similarly, none of his good decisions ever made a great story.

Jon and his wife, Gila, are the co-founders of Dog is Good, a lifestyle brand for dog lovers. Their products can be found online at dogisgood.com and on Amazon, and have been seen in thousands of store-fronts all over the US and internationally. They also have a number of other entrepreneurial pursuits.
